Here is a list of \u201cDo Not Do\u201d practices for you to observe that will maximize the longevity of optical media you are handling.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Touch the surface of the disc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Bend the disc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Use adhesive labels.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Store discs horizontally for a long time (years).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Open a recordable optical disc package if you are not ready to record.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Expose discs to extreme heat or high humidity.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Expose discs to extremely rapid temperature or humidity changes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Expose recordable discs to prolonged sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet light.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Write or mark in the data area of the disc (the area the laser \u201creads\u201d).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Clean by wiping in a direction going around the disc. There was an item in the DO list that corresponds to this saying to wipe from the hub to the outer edge.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/span>For CDs especially do not:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Scratch the label side of the disc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Use a pen, pencil, or fine-tip marker to write on the disc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Write on the disc with markers that contain solvents.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
